Understanding KEAM Score Calculation & Admission Process
KEAM (Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical) is conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Government of Kerala. The exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 (Physics & Chemistry) and Paper 2 (Mathematics), each with 120 questions carrying 4 marks each and negative marking of −1 per wrong answer. Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 lakh candidates appear for KEAM each year, competing for seats in over 160 colleges across Kerala.
KEAM Exam Structure & Scoring (Official – CEE, Kerala)
- Paper 1 – Physics: 60 questions × 4 marks = 240 marks
- Paper 1 – Chemistry: 60 questions × 4 marks = 240 marks
- Paper 2 – Mathematics: 120 questions × 4 marks = 480 marks
- Negative marking: −1 mark for each wrong answer in all papers
Key Factors Influencing Your KEAM Rank
-
Mathematics has the Highest Weightage: Paper 2 (Mathematics) carries 480 marks, which is 50% of the total KEAM score of 960. Physics and Chemistry together contribute 480 marks (240 each). Excelling in Mathematics is the single most impactful factor in improving your KEAM score.
-
Entrance Exam + Class 12 Board Marks: For engineering seat allotment, CEE Kerala uses a combined rank based on 50% weightage to KEAM exam score and 50% weightage to normalized Class 12 PCM marks. Strong board marks can compensate for a slightly lower exam score.
-
Category-Based Reservations: Kerala follows state government reservation policies. Categories include General, SEBC (27%), SC (8%), ST (2%), OEC (3%), EWS (10%), and various special quotas for PWD, NRI, Sports, Ex-Servicemen, etc. Separate rank lists are prepared for each category.
-
Negative Marking Impact: KEAM deducts 1 mark for every wrong answer. Strategic answering by skipping highly uncertain questions can meaningfully improve your net score and thus your rank.
-
Tiebreaker Rules (Official): In case of equal KEAM combined scores, the tiebreaker order is: 1) Higher marks in Mathematics (Paper 2), 2) Higher marks in Physics, 3) Higher marks in Chemistry, 4) Higher Class 12 PCM aggregate, 5) Date of birth (elder candidate preferred).

KEAM Admission Process & Eligibility Rules
Summary of the KEAM admission structure, eligibility requirements, score calculation, and key counselling rules for Kerala engineering college admissions through CEE Kerala.
Eligibility & Score Calculation
-
Eligibility: Passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Minimum 45% aggregate in PCM for General category (40% for SEBC, lower for SC/ST).
-
Score Formula: Total KEAM Score = Paper 1 (Physics 240 + Chemistry 240) + Paper 2 (Mathematics 480) = 960 marks. Negative marking of −1 per wrong answer applies in all papers.
-
Combined Rank: For seat allotment, 50% weightage to KEAM exam score and 50% to normalized Class 12 PCM marks are used to prepare the final combined rank list for engineering admissions.
Counselling & Seat Allotment
-
Centralized Allotment Process (CAP): KEAM counselling is conducted by CEE Kerala through a centralized online process. Candidates fill college and branch choices at cee.kerala.gov.in.
-
