  • OR within the Top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their qualifying board
  • Five subjects considered: Physics, Chemistry, Maths, one Language, and one elective with highest marks

Two-Paper Examination Pattern & Dynamic Scoring

Unlike JEE Main which follows a predictable question count, JEE Advanced features a dynamic question paper structure with complex multi-select questions, partial marking schemes, and strict negative marking designed to test deep conceptual mastery.

Exam Dimension JEE Main 2027 (NTA) JEE Advanced 2027 (JAB / IIT)
Conducting Authority National Testing Agency (NTA) Organizing IIT & Joint Admission Board (JAB)
Participating Colleges 32 NITs, 26 IIITs, 40+ GFTIs & State Engineering Colleges All 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
Number of Papers Single 3-hour Paper (Paper 1 for B.Tech) Two Mandatory 3-Hour Papers (Paper 1 + Paper 2 on same day)
Exam Timings Shift 1: 09:00 – 12:00 OR Shift 2: 15:00 – 18:00 Paper 1: 09:00 – 12:00 AND Paper 2: 14:30 – 17:30 (Compulsory)
Question Predictability Fixed: 90 Questions (attempt 75 for 300 marks) Dynamic: Total marks and question counts vary annually (~180 marks per paper)
Question Varieties MCQs (+4, -1) and Numerical Value (+4, -1) Single Option, Multi-Correct Options with Partial Marking, Numerical Value, Matrix Match, Paragraphs
Subject-wise Cutoff No minimum subject cutoff (only overall percentile) Strict Subject-Wise Cutoffs: Candidate must clear separate minimum marks in Physics, Chemistry, AND Maths
Attempt Limitations 3 consecutive years from Class 12 passing Strictly 2 consecutive years from Class 12 appearance

🎯 Multi-Correct Questions & Partial Marks

One of the hallmark challenges of JEE Advanced. Questions may have one, two, three, or all four options correct:

  • Full Marks (+4): If ALL correct options are selected and NO incorrect option is chosen
  • Partial Marks (+3): If all 4 options are correct but only 3 are chosen
  • Partial Marks (+2): If 3 or more options are correct but only 2 chosen
  • Partial Marks (+1): If 2 or more options are correct but only 1 chosen
  • Negative Marks (-2): If ANY incorrect option is selected

🔢 Non-Negative & Decimal Numericals

Numerical value questions require solving to exact integer or decimal precision entered via the on-screen virtual keypad:

  • Scoring Scheme: Typically +3 or +4 marks for correct numerical answer
  • Zero / Negative Marking: Zero marks if unattempted; select sections carry -1 negative marking
  • No options provided — requires absolute numerical precision rounded as directed in question
  • Tests rigorous analytical derivation without back-substituting answer choices

📚 Matrix Match & Paragraph Sets

Tests the synthesis of inter-connected concepts across multiple sub-topics within Physics, Chemistry, or Maths:

  • Matching Lists: Match Column 1 items with multiple corresponding entries in Column 2 (+3 for correct match, -1 for error)
  • Comprehension Paragraphs: A rigorous scientific or mathematical premise followed by 2 to 3 linked questions
  • Requires coherent understanding of laboratory physics, organic reaction mechanisms, and multi-variable calculus

JoSAA IIT Rules

Category Reservations & Female Supernumerary Quota (20%)

IIT admissions strictly implement statutory Government of India reservations alongside the pioneering 20% Female Supernumerary Quota instituted to promote women in STEM without decreasing seats for gender-neutral applicants.

👩 20% Female Supernumerary Quota

A transformative policy created by the Joint Admission Board in 2018:

  • Ensures female enrollment in every branch of every IIT reaches at least 20%
  • Seats are created supernumerary (over and above regular intake) — not a single open seat is reduced
  • Female candidates compete in both the Gender-Neutral pool and the Female-Only pool
  • Results in significantly expanded closing ranks for girl students across premier IIT CSE & ECE branches

⚖️ Statutory Category Reservations

Mandatory seat allocation percentages per Central Government guidelines:

  • GEN-EWS: 10% seats for Economically Weaker Section candidates
  • OBC-NCL: 27% seats for Non-Creamy Layer Other Backward Classes
  • SC (Scheduled Caste): 15% seats with relaxed qualifying cutoffs
  • ST (Scheduled Tribe): 7.5% seats with relaxed qualifying cutoffs
  • PwD: 5% horizontal reservation in each category for ≥ 40% benchmark disability

📄 Central Format Certificate Requirements

Strict certificate standards enforced during online JoSAA document verification:

  • OBC-NCL & GEN-EWS certificates must be issued on or after April 1, 2027
  • Must be issued in the prescribed Government of India Central format (State formats are rejected)
  • Issuing authority must be Tehsildar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), or District Magistrate
  • Failure to produce valid central certificate converts candidate to General category

Frequently Asked Questions — JEE Advanced 2027

Authoritative answers to the most common queries regarding JEE Advanced eligibility, attempt limits, paper patterns, JoSAA choices, and IIT admission rules.

How many attempts are allowed for JEE Advanced 2027? +

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. For JEE Advanced 2027, candidates who appeared for their Class 12 board examination for the first time in either 2026 or 2027 are eligible. If you appeared for Class 12 in 2025 or earlier, you are ineligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2027, regardless of whether you attempted the exam in those years.

Is appearing in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 compulsory? +

Yes, appearing in BOTH Paper 1 (morning shift 09:00 AM – 12:00 PM) and Paper 2 (afternoon shift 02:30 PM – 05:30 PM) is strictly compulsory. If a candidate appears in only one of the two papers, they will be marked ABSENT, their performance will not be evaluated, and they will not be awarded any rank in JEE Advanced 2027.

Can a student currently studying in an NIT appear for JEE Advanced 2027? +

Yes! Students admitted to NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs are fully eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2027 provided they satisfy the age limit, the 2 consecutive year attempt limit (Class 12 in 2026 or 2027), and qualify in the top 2,50,000 of JEE Main 2027. Only candidates who were previously admitted to an IIT are barred from appearing.

What happens if I score high marks overall but fail the cutoff in one subject? +

To be included in the JEE Advanced Common Rank List (CRL) or any Category Rank List, a candidate must score equal to or above the minimum qualifying percentage in EACH of the three individual subjects (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) AND meet the minimum aggregate qualifying percentage. If you fail to meet the individual cutoff in even one subject, you will NOT receive an All India Rank and will be disqualified from IIT admissions.

Do IITs participate in CSAB Special Rounds? +

No. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) do NOT participate in CSAB Special Rounds. Admissions to all 23 IITs conclude permanently with Round 6 of JoSAA. Any vacant seats remaining in IITs after JoSAA Round 6 are not offered in CSAB or any spot rounds; they simply lapse.

What is the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) for IIT seats in JoSAA? +

The mandatory Seat Acceptance Fee is ₹35,000 for General, OBC-NCL, and GEN-EWS candidates, and ₹17,500 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates. It must be paid online in the round where you receive your very first seat allotment. If you fail to pay the SAF within the round deadline, your allotted seat is cancelled, and you are ejected from the remaining JoSAA rounds.

What is the difference between Float and Slide for IIT choices? +

Float: Accepts the allotted seat while keeping your candidacy active for higher preferences in ANY participating institute (higher IIT branches or other IITs).
Slide: Accepts the allotted seat while seeking an upgrade to a higher-preference academic branch strictly within the SAME allotted institute (e.g. upgrading from Mechanical to Electrical within IIT Bombay only).

What is the deadline to withdraw an IIT seat in JoSAA? +

For candidates holding a seat in an IIT, withdrawal and request for refund of the Seat Acceptance Fee (minus ₹7,000 administrative charges) is permitted strictly up to the penultimate round (Round 5). Once Round 6 commences, no withdrawal is permitted for IIT seats, and no refund will be issued.

How does the Top 20 Percentile criteria work for state boards? +

If a candidate scores below 75% in their Class 12 board examination, they can still qualify for IIT admission if their aggregate marks place them within the official Top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their qualifying board for their passing year and category. Cutoff marks for the Top 20 percentile are declared by each board and published centrally by JoSAA.
