JoSAA IIT Seat Allocation & Reservation Rules Explained

Admissions to all 23 IITs are conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) based purely on JEE Advanced Common Rank List (CRL) and Category Ranks. Understanding the reservation dynamics and supernumerary rules is crucial:

Category Reservation & Supernumerary Quota

Seats across all 23 IITs are categorized as per Govt. of India reservation mandates and JoSAA guidelines:

OPEN (General) + OBC-NCL (27%) + GEN-EWS (10%) + SC (15%) + ST (7.5%) + PwD (5% Horizontal)
  • Female Supernumerary Quota (20%): Supernumerary seats are created in every branch across all IITs to ensure a minimum of 20% female enrollment. Female candidates are considered for both Gender-Neutral seats and Female-Only seats.
  • OBC-NCL & GEN-EWS Validity: Central certificate issued on or after April 1st of the admission year is mandatory for claiming category rank benefits during JoSAA document verification.
  • Subject-wise Minimum Criteria: Candidates must clear the minimum qualifying percentage in each individual subject (typically 10% for OPEN, 9% for OBC/EWS, 5% for SC/ST) to receive an all-India rank.

Premier IITs Opening & Closing Cutoffs (CRL)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the JEE Advanced Rank Predictor calculate my rank?
The JEE Advanced Rank Predictor evaluates your aggregate score obtained across Paper 1 and Paper 2 (out of 360 marks) and benchmarks it against historical cutoff trends, candidate distribution percentiles, and Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) data from previous JEE Advanced exams. It computes your estimated Common Rank List (CRL), category rank, and branch admission forecast across all 23 IITs.
What is the minimum qualifying score in JEE Advanced?
Candidates must satisfy two distinct criteria to qualify in JEE Advanced: (1) Subject-wise Minimum: at least 10% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics each (9% for OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS, 5% for SC/ST/PwD), and (2) Aggregate Minimum: typically around 35% of total marks for General (31.5% for OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS, 17.5% for SC/ST/PwD).
What marks are required for Computer Science (CSE) at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi?
For Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Bombay, candidates typically need a score of 295+ marks out of 360 (CRL within top 65). For CSE at IIT Delhi, a score of 285+ marks (CRL within top 115) is generally required for General category candidates in the Gender-Neutral pool.
How does the Female Supernumerary Quota affect JEE Advanced closing ranks?
The Ministry of Education created supernumerary seats to guarantee at least 20% female enrollment across all IIT branches. Because these are additional seats created over and above the regular intake, closing ranks for female candidates expand substantially—often by 1,000 to 3,000+ ranks compared to Gender-Neutral closing ranks.
How are ties resolved in JEE Advanced ranking if two candidates get equal marks?
When two or more candidates obtain identical aggregate scores in JEE Advanced: (1) Higher positive marks in Mathematics is given priority, (2) If still tied, higher positive marks in Physics is prioritized, and (3) If still unresolved, candidates are awarded the same rank in the rank list.
Which institutes besides the 23 IITs accept JEE Advanced scores?
Besides the 23 IITs, several premier national science and technology institutes accept JEE Advanced ranks for admissions through their respective counselling portals: Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bangalore), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE Visakhapatnam), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT Amethi), and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST Thiruvananthapuram).
