Understanding JEE Main Score Calculation & Admission Process
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination - Mains) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year (Session 1 in January/February and Session 2 in April). It tests Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with the best of the two session percentile scores considered for ranking. In 2024, approximately 14.15 lakh unique candidates appeared, making it the largest engineering entrance exam in India by participation.
JEE Main Exam Structure & Scoring (Official – NTA)
- Each subject: 20 MCQ questions (+4/-1) + 10 Numerical Value questions (+4/0) = 100 marks
- MCQ: +4 marks for correct answer, -1 mark for wrong answer, 0 for unattempted
- Numerical Value (Integer type): +4 marks for correct, 0 for wrong (no negative marking)
- Total: 90 questions; duration: 3 hours (180 minutes)
- Best of two session percentile scores is used for final All India Rank (AIR)
Key Factors Influencing Your JEE Main Rank
-
Percentile-Based Rank (Normalization): JEE Main uses a percentile normalization process across multiple sessions and shifts to ensure fairness. Your raw score is converted to a percentile, and the best percentile across sessions determines your final AIR. Candidates are not compared by raw marks directly.
-
All Three Subjects Carry Equal Weightage: Unlike some state exams, all three subjects in JEE Main carry equal marks (100 each). However, Mathematics is typically the differentiating factor at high percentiles as fewer candidates score perfectly in it.
-
Negative Marking in MCQs: JEE Main MCQ questions carry -1 penalty per wrong answer. Numerical value questions have no negative marking. Candidates must be careful about guessing on MCQs to avoid score reduction.
-
Category-Based Reservations (Central): JEE Main follows central government reservation policies: EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, PwD 5% horizontal. Separate merit lists are prepared for each category by JoSAA for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admissions.
-
Tiebreaker Rules (Official NTA): In case of equal percentile, tiebreaker order is: 1) Higher NTA Percentile in Mathematics, 2) Higher NTA Percentile in Physics, 3) Higher NTA Percentile in Chemistry, 4) Candidates older in age (earlier date of birth) are preferred.

JEE Main Admission Process & Eligibility Rules
Summary of the JEE Main admission structure, eligibility requirements, scoring, and key JoSAA counselling rules for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admissions.
Eligibility & Score Calculation
-
Eligibility: Passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Minimum 75% aggregate in PCM for General/EWS/OBC-NCL (65% for SC/ST) for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission. No age limit from 2021 onwards (NTA policy).
-
Score Formula: Total JEE Main Score = Physics (100) + Chemistry (100) + Mathematics (100) = 300. MCQ: +4/-1. Numerical Type: +4/0. Best of two sessions is taken for AIR.
-
Percentile-Based AIR: NTA converts raw score to a percentile via normalization. The best percentile from either session forms your final AIR, used by JoSAA and CSAB for seat allocation in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
JoSAA Counselling & Seat Allotment
-
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority): JEE Main qualified candidates participate in JoSAA counselling for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs online at josaa.nic.in. JoSAA conducts 6 rounds of seat allotment. JEE Advanced qualified candidates additionally compete for IIT seats.
-
Home State / Other State Quota: NITs allocate 50% seats to Home State (HS) candidates and 50% to Other State (OS) candidates. Cutoff ranks differ significantly between HS and OS. IIITs and GFTIs generally have All India quota.
-
31 NITs, 26 IIITs, 33+ GFTIs: JoSAA 2024 covered 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 33+ GFTIs offering approximately 56,000+ undergraduate engineering seats across disciplines all over India.
