MAHE 50:50 Band System & Merit Formula Explained

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) uses an equal 50:50 composite model to determine the B.Tech merit rank. Understanding the Band System helps you strategize both entrance test prep and board percentages:

Composite Merit Formula

Your final merit score (out of 100) is calculated by adding the scaled MET exam score and your Class 12th Board Band score:

Total Composite Score (100) = [(MET Score / 240) × 50] + [(Board Band / 10) × 50]
  • MET Score Component (50% Weight): Raw test score out of 240 marks is scaled linearly down to 50 points.
  • Board Band Component (50% Weight): Class 12th aggregate in 4 subjects (Physics, Math, Chemistry/CS, English) is mapped to Bands 1 to 10.
  • Equalization Across Boards: The Band System prevents disparities between strict state board marking and high-scoring CBSE/ISC boards.

Official MAHE Board Band Mapping

Class 12th Aggregate % MAHE Band Level Board Score (Out of 50)
95.0% – 100.0% Band 10 50.0 Points (Max)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the MET Rank Predictor calculate my Manipal rank?
The MET Rank Predictor calculates your All India Merit Rank (AIR) by implementing the official MAHE 50:50 formula. It normalizes your MET exam score (out of 240) into a 50-point scale and combines it with your Class 12th Board marks evaluated through MAHE's official 10-Band normalization table. It then estimates your percentile and rank by matching your composite score against historical admission data from over 45,000+ applicants.
How does the MAHE 50:50 Band System affect my rank if I scored low in boards?
Because Class 12th board marks carry a 50% weightage through fixed 5-point bands, each drop in band (e.g. from Band 10 at 95%+ to Band 8 at 85-90%) represents a 10-point loss out of 100 in composite score. To compensate for a lower board band, you must score significantly higher in the MET CBT test (every 24 marks in MET equals 5 composite points / 1 board band).
What is considered a safe score in MET for Computer Science (CSE) at MIT Manipal?
For Computer Science & Engineering (CSE Core) at MIT Manipal main campus, a composite score of 84+ (Rank below 1,000) is considered safe. Typically, this requires 140–160+ marks in MET along with 90%+ (Band 9 or Band 10) in Class 12th board examinations. For CSE specializations like AI/ML, Data Science, and IT, a composite score between 78 and 83 (Rank below 2,500) is competitive.
Can I improve my score by attempting multiple MET sessions / phases?
Yes. MAHE conducts MET in multiple phases (typically Phase 1 and Phase 2). Candidates are permitted to appear in both sessions. If you appear for multiple phases, MAHE considers the best of the two MET scores while computing your final 50:50 composite merit rank during centralized counselling.
What is the minimum eligibility criteria for MAHE B.Tech admissions?
Candidates must have passed 10+2 / A-Level / IB / equivalent with Physics, Mathematics, and English as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry / Biotechnology / Biology / Computer Science or any technical vocational subject from a recognized board, with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in Physics, Mathematics, and the optional subject taken together.
How is tie-breaking resolved if two candidates have identical composite scores?
In case of equal composite scores in MET merit lists, ties are resolved using MAHE's sequential tie-breaking protocol: (1) Higher marks scored in Mathematics in MET, (2) Higher marks scored in Physics in MET, (3) Higher marks scored in Chemistry in MET, and (4) Age of the candidate (the older candidate is ranked higher).
